New Site Design

Sep 12th, 2008
by Andrew Ross.

I am currently overhauling and redesigning my site, so you may notice some strange behaviour with menus, layouts, etc. I’m starting with this blog, and the rest of the site will follow. Hopefully it won’t take much longer.

The upgrades are now complete and all the main pages have been updated! There are still a few miscellaneous error pages, small tweaks in the design, etc, to finish, but most of the important stuff is done. If you have any comments or find any problems please let me know. Thanks.

When I finally divorced my web designers – after five years and tens of thousand’s of dollars – resulting in a beautiful but buggy and useless site, I began to learn – and learn and still learn some more.

I have come back to WordPress after a sortee with Drupal and Joomla which challenged my fledgling skills in html and CSS.

I like your site and the drama of your photos on black. The rosewood unfortunately is somewhat lost on my monitor (could be age – its, not mine). I also use the Chrome browser which I love, but it sometimes has limitations (mostly forgivable and continually improving). I would only mention that the headings in the sidebar and menu headings (in particular) are hard to see. When I first visited the site, I had to scroll across the top menu to highlight before I could find headings and see how to contact you.

I also use the black for drama on my own site. In fact I recently posted an article on living in an architecturally designed home and loved how the black set off the photo. I experimented with the light font in bold to improve readability.

    Cheers!

    Hi Marilyn,

Thanks very much for your feedback and comments about my site. You make a good point about the menu items, and I hadn’t really noticed it before. The light grey colour of the inactive menu items was supposed to be somewhat subdued compared to the active or mouseover colours. However, when I picked those colours I was still using the original pure black background, so they were a little easier to see. Now that I have switched to the rosewood background they are harder to see, and I will try to fix that.

I had a look at your site as well, and that is one beautiful home you have for sale!

    Thanks again,

    Andrew
