There was a great op-ed piece in New York Times on the 16th by Robert Goodman, a professor of environmental design at Hampshire College, that stresses how important it is to take advantage of the opportunity this current crisis in the auto industry provides to rebuild our mass transit systems.
There’s another great article on commondreams.org that documents the efforts of GM to systematically destroy the North American mass transit system and foster a dependency on automobiles. I really hope our governments do not reward these companies, just so they can continue with their disastrous business practices. By all means, lets keep the men and women on the lines working, but let’s get them building something that society really needs, and let’s build it locally!
If you haven’t seen it yet, I would encourage everyone to go out and rent the movie Who Killed the Electric Car? I think this documentary is more relevant now than when it was released in 2006. Thanks to No Impact Man for sharing the links to the articles above.
